Garter Carriage REBORN!

As promised in my last posting here is the rejuvenation of my "new to me" Garter Carriage.  There are photos of the condition I received it in, a picture of the whitening process, putting it back together and the finished result.

I am thrilled with the way it turned out and it runs great!  This is not a difficult process, just some screws to remove and off you go (lots of cleaning and whitening done here).

I implore all machine knitters after each big project to de-fuzz any of their KM's, Garter Carriages and etc.  The tarn fuzz builds up, collects on excess grease and oil and can cause damage.  Don't over grease, oil or lube; it builds up and again, can actually do more harm than good!

  2. I think I will send you mine to do!!! You need to remind me of the ingredients for the whitening mixture - I would like to try it on my bulky 155 as it is a bit yellow in places. Great job Tom!! Now to see some things of what you make with it!

    1. Thank you. And to think someone was using it like that. It was disgusting, the thick, black, mucky grease was everywhere once I took the cover off, YUK! I feel as if I rescued it! LOL

  4. Hello,Tom! Thanks for Your magic whitening recipe!!! What reason of adding Xanthan Gum powder ? Thanks!!! Natali.

    1. Natali,

The Xanthan Gum (natural food item/additive) is used to thicken the mixture. Sort of like flour or cornstarch do when cooking. Without it the mixture would be runny like water and run off the plastic. The Glycerin helps the mixture to "stick" to the plastic without separating.

      Hope this helps!

  5. Thank You, Tom! Now I am understanding it all. I want to place your whitening recipe on some russian knitting forum with full references where I find this "treasure" and who is the author. May I do this? And do You want to have the reference about? Thanks! Natali.

  6. Natali,

Yes you can do that and you can include me as the reference. It is nice to talk with people from all over the world! If I can help anyone it would be my pleasure.

  8. Hi Tom,

Seeing what you managed to do with a garter carriage that looked ready for the trash, I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for my particular fix. I've read of a mysterious '2 colour conversion' for the garter carriage but can't for the life of me work out to either do it myself or where I can buy the kit from. I've seen some photos of two strands of yarn being fed into the carriage at once but that's all I know. Would you know more about this mysterious 2 colour hack?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

    1. Yes Sarah I do know of the GC conversion to knit two colors of yarn. You may want to contact Mike Becker at Distinctive Knits http://store.dknits.com/ he may be able to help you with getting the GC converted.

  11. Hello Tom, Don't know if you can help, but I have a GC 93 which does not return left to right. I am using cams at either end. This means I have to be with it every two rows! Yours hopefully, Tiggles.
